Computer Question

My mom's looking into getting a Sony VAIO. This will be her first computer, she's got a budget of $800, and she basically wants to be able to surf the Internet, download videos and do some writing. Does anyone know anything about Sony (my comps have always been Toshibas)? Also, any opinions on Windows Vista (Home Premium)?

I can't speak on Sony computers in particular (mostly used Dell before finally going back to Apple), but from all feedback I've heard XP is better than Vista if you can still get it. That said, I haven't heard of anything that would interfere with your mother's needs, either.

I've heard mixed opinions on VAIO computers - some people say they're rubbish, some people say they're very good, so I'm afraid I can't offer you much help there. If it's any consolation, the more recent opinions I've heard is that they're very good.

However, everyone I know is unanimous in their hatred of Vista. It's like the devil, seriously. If you can get XP somehow go for it, because it is a lot better. I know from experience that Vista is impossible to connect to some wireless routers, just because the mood strikes it; it's also quite bothersome and nags you every time you click on something, basically. So yeah, go for XP if you can, because Vista is SO not worth it.

I like my toshiba. 500$ at frys and it is really nice with Vista.

But if you want to look at a price comparison with reviews, I'm going to plug the company that I'm interning at.

My mom's now looking at Acer laptops. It's pretty impossible to get XP now (my next computer will be a Mac because I am so NOT dealing with Vista). What's your computer now?
