That was a bumper sticker I saw on a car in my church one day. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw this strip from xkcd:

I'm not searching out any news about the oil spill, because I'll just worry endlessly about something I can't do much about, though I do plan to see if I can volunteer with clean-up this summer. But I can't help reading the headlines of the newspapers I pass by, and I just know whenever BP says anything, they're lying out their ass. My mom used to describe Louisiana as more Caribbean then U.S. and I think she's right, both in the cultural sense and in how we're treated by the media and the government in the rest of U.S.

Still, I'll pay good money (to the Dems, natch) to watch James Carville ride an alligator. *g*

The storm has passed. We lucked out - power cut out for us at 9:30 AM, but was back on by 5 PM. *g* I have also demonstrated both my foresight and observational powers. I moved Ippy, our Buick, out of its customary place in front of the house last night and woke up this morning to the sight of the birch tree falling exactly it would have been parked. Later today, I noticed a wire for the fountain in our little courtyard sparking and going up in flames, right next to the wooden fence. My mom managed to put the fire out and unplug the fountain, so I think we're okay on that score too. Whew.

I've also been calling friends - everybody seems all right, including [livejournal.com profile] alimaaneal, [livejournal.com profile] rowandruid (thought they have no power yet) and [livejournal.com profile] narnia_girl. However, by the pictures on the television, New Orleans is a disaster area. They talking about a month for power to completely turn back on there, so it's pretty serious. I don't think, however, that it was as bad as it could have been and despite damage, the Superdome seems to have survived which is good news for the 10,000 people taking shelter there.
