Keep in mind that everything on the Archive of Our Own can be downloaded in Kindle format (that's .mobi) for your reading enjoyment. Someone on my reading list was recently asking for recs of longfic she could read without knowing the fandom.
(If you have your Kindle on a wi-fi network, emailing files to your Kindle's email address -- the Manage Your Kindle page at Amazon will tell you what this is and you can change it if you want -- will load them there for free, otherwise you can plug in and transfer from your computer. Transfer of personal files over the cell network costs per megabyte, but web browsing over the cell network and downloading from Amazon is free.)
Sources of cheap/free books:
Honestly, I download a bunch of stuff, most of it lousy, from the Free Book lists at Kindle Boards and Mobile Read. (MR also maintains an archive of nicely-formatted public domain books.) There are also the lists at someplace like Inkmesh, but it is a little hard to navigate. I know there are better free-ebook sites out there.
Speaking of public-domain, a lot of it is put up for free on the Amazon website, but in case you run into something that isn't, there's always Project Gutenberg.
Baen Books (who sell books at Webscription) maintain a large catalog of free books at the Baen Free Library. They also occasionally bind CD-ROMs of ebooks into their hardcovers that they allow you to freely distribute, like these people are doing. This is relevant to your interests because the Cryoburn CD contains the entire Vorkosigan series.
As for recs for things you might actually want to buy, I have been reccing Mira Grant's Newsflesh books (Feed, Deadline) and I maintain that they are awesome even if you don't like zombies. I don't like zombies that much! (lysimache has been reading a bunch of mysteries wherein Josephine Tey solves mysteries, but I forget the author. Also the Roma Sub Rosa books by Steven Saylor.) I am probably about to read all the Rosemary Sutcliff I can find, and then maybe the Liaden series (available at Baen) because I hear that's good. One of these days I will buy the Sime-Gen series reissues as well. And Diane Duane keeps releasing so much of her backlist in ebook form...
