It's been a good Sunday: my friend Olivia got back from Germany and brought me German chocolate. We ended up hanging out all day - kinda basking in the unusually cool August weather. And then I watched some Starsky & Hutch, feeding my detective show craving now that I'm almost done with the first two seasons of dueSouth. *grins*

And now I've got another of the drabble requests written. (And feel free to request a drabble of your own - just comment on the original entry.)

For [livejournal.com profile] buddyblue82, who wanted Strider, sword, grief:

Strider sat by the fire, his sword lying beside him in easy reach. The flames were dancing high, but he had no inclination to dampen the fire. In a world where the darkness was creeping up like a persistent weed, tendril by tendril, a little light could not hurt. Middle Earth was choked, and it would take battle and blood to free it again.

He grieved for the land, for the sky, for the people. Much would be lost. But he would not admit that he grieved for himself, for the loss of freedom and the forest. In the morning, he would pretend that he could cast Strider off like a cloak, and head to the east.

Oh, that's lovely -- there is one line in ROTK that really kills me, when the Battle of the Pelennor fields has already been fought and Imrahil is insisting Aragorn march into the city as the king, wearing the Star of Arnor and blah blah blah and he says that no, he'll remain outside as a Ranger unused to cities of stone, or something to that effect, and I just feel so bad for him, because accepting this fate of his means giving up everything he's been up until that point, and from the books you do get a sense that he enjoys being Strider, this nameless wandering prowling all of Middle Earth. From that to the Citadel in Minas Tirith, it's such a big change that I can't help but to wonder how he copes with it.

Er, what I meant is, very lovely drabble. I love Aragorn. :)

Oh, wow. *blushes*

he'll remain outside as a Ranger unused to cities of stone, or something to that effect, and I just feel so bad for him, because accepting this fate of his means giving up everything he's been up until that point,

*nods* Exaclty how I feel - I'm glad my drabble communicated that well. Thank you!

Oh, you're very welcome -- it really was lovely. I find writing in the Tolkien universe so damned daunting, because it's all so sprawling and large and yet so tight and coherent that it seems no matter what I say I'm bound to contradict canon one way or another, so I'm always in awe when someone does it, and does it well.
