fannish curiosity (killed the cat)
Jun. 26th, 2006 11:01 amMmm, coffee. *takes another sips* So, someone on my flist (I'm being vague because it's a locked post) posted about forgeting about being besotted with RayK when she hadn't watched due South in a while. And I was wondering, which characters do y'all feel like that about? I obviously have lots (Methos! Susan Ivanova! RayK! Utena! John Sheppard!), but if you had to narrow it down to one or two, which ones would you choose? And what especially do you love about them?

Date: 2006-06-27 04:32 am (UTC)*Nods.* Yeah, that makes more sense to me.
...what I guess I meant is the characters you could come back to again and again, even though you may not be actively reading or writing about them now.
That rules out characters I'm freshly obsessed with because I can't say for certain if I'll really be able to come back to them later. It also rules out characters I was terribly obsessed with once, but haven't had any luck returning to.

*Spends sometime trying to decide which two to pick.* There are characters of my own I've been revisiting since I first developed them at 8 or 10, but I'll go with characters from other people's canon.
Probably the earliest canon character I developed a full relationship with, and have been revisiting ever since is Magneto/Michael Xavier/Eric Magnus Lehnsherr. The version I generally revisit is one from the 80's who'd given up being a bad guy to run Xavier's school while Charles was gone. I loved how uncertain he was of his ability to do good, how much he wanted to do the right thing. It broke my heart when the writers had him decide he'd failed utterly and return to being a bad guy. My Magneto was one of the heroes in the one shot Marvel did for Ethiopian famine relief "Heroes for Hope." He felt those starving kids suffering like his own when he was a starving kid in a concentration camp. The other version of Magneto I sometimes revisit is a version from the 90's. He was part of an alternate timeline Marvel did called the Age of Apocalypse. It was another version of a good guy Magneto.
My other choice who hasn't been part of my life nearly so long is Methos. Magneto and I have been together since '86. Methos and I have only been together since '95. I love him because he's 5,000 years old, and while he told Joe at the end of "One Minute to Midnight" he didn't know who he was I've always had the impression he knows who he is. Who he is changes, some of the things he's been he's not proud of, but he accepts them. I believe he genuinely offered Duncan his head in "Methos." Things revealed about him later may make some question it in hindsight, but I don't think they change a thing. He can be a manipulative bastard. He can also be tired, or lonely, or loving. Methos is an endlessly complicated and fascinating character.

Oh, I never read the comics, but I've seen the movies and read a lot about both Eric and Charles when reading movieverse fic. The flashback was one of the few decent things about X3. I would agree that he's an intriguing character.

I only got back into HL fandom this winter, but I've also loved Methos since about 1995. I think I agree with you that, deep down, he always knows who is, but also can change and adapt endlessly.

Yes, yes, yes. What I love about Methos is that he's *so* human - being 5,000 years old doesn't neccesary make him more wise, or evil, or anything - it just makes him more human.

Heh, I read the comic books for 15 years, watched two cartoon series about the X-Men, and three movies. :D I gave up the books because too many of the writers treated him as simply a two dimensional super villain. I do like the movies for incorporating his being a Holocaust survivor, and having been friends with Charles Xavier once. It's just my favorite version is one that was accepted by the X-Men, and used the alias Michael Xavier.

Welcome back. O:)

*Nods.* I see him as having a core where he always knows who he is, but a lot to him that is endlessly changing.
Yes, yes, yes. What I love about Methos is that he's *so* human - being 5,000 years old doesn't necessary make him more wise, or evil, or anything - it just makes him more human.
*Grins.* An older vampire in a book I read once, when asked by a younger one if age changed them, said, "We are who we were." I love how very human Methos is.
