For dueSouth people: Ray Vecchio is a darker character than Ray Kowalski. Discuss.

Also, I am studying for my very last undergraduate final, and I am bored out of my freakin' mind.

darker in what sense?

*snuggles wonderful distracting wynterhawk*

It seems to me that Ray V tends more to hide things more than Ray K - past girlfriends, his relationship with his father (I mean, he never says anything to Fraser about his ghost, after Fraser admits to seeing his own father's ghost), etc. Then, of course, post-canon, there's the fact he was undercover in the mob for two years. That's gotta bring some darkness to the character. Ray K seems to be more upfront about his pain, a bit more willing to fight things out, a bit more persistent.

Mind you, it's been years since I saw the Ray K seasons, and I'm only halfway through season 2 DVDs. *g*

Any thoughts?

Hmmmm...I had to think about that for a bit, but yes, you could be right. I read your comments to wynterhawk. Though, I'm basically a RayK gal, I do like Vecchio. I think that stint undercover in the mob had to have some lingering, strong effects on him. Of course, it's up to fanfic writers to tell that story. I'd love to myself, but I'm not a strong enough writer to do it justice.

*nods* Post-mob - it's gotta be interesting for RayV. Moving to Florida with Stella diminishes some of the displacement effects of having being back in Chicago, but he's still going to have some culture shock that this comes from not being undercover anymore. As I said above, RayV seems to submerge things more than RayK, and I would guess he wouldn't be willing to talk much about the less glamorous aspects of his life undercover. Add that ontop to starting a brand new relationship, well, it's gonna be a bit difficult. I wouldn't be surprised if he and Stella had a hard time making it work after the initial honeymoon phase wears off.

*g* I'm usually more into RayK, but as I've worked my way through the first two seasons (which I really hadn't seen much of before), I've gotten more and more fascinated by Ray Vecchio.

I'd definitely agree. And it's more than that -- all of the characters are dark, have the potential to be darker than the humor of the show often has us view them.

The difference between them feels like... Vecchio has a lot of skeletons in his closet, whereas Kowalski's skeletons are hanging around in the living room, getting some air and listening to music.

*nods* And I agree that the show can be a lot darker than it usually is. The humour fuels the show, but a lot of my favourite episodes are the darker ones - i.e. the Zuko plotline.

Oh, yeah, I love it when they show the darkness that potentially lies under the characters. Vecchio's feud with Zuko, Fraser's lost love story, RayK's mistake as a rookie -- these are the tragic underpinnings that show us why these characters need to connect with each other.

Hmmm. I don't think Vecchio is darker than Kowalski, in the sense that he's hiding his past or his emotions. Ray seems to be the type that would talk about anything, even his painful past if given a chance. We can see his readiness to talk in episodes such as "Gift of the Wheelman" where he talks a little about his experiences with his father, and in "You Must Remember This" where he talks about love-signs and how his father fell in love with his mother, and in "The Duel" where he expresses his concerns about the case and his ability to outwit Carver, and how he never did so well with those analytical problems in school.

Watching S 1/2 and listening to him, you can glean quite a bit about his personality and his character. By watching his expressions and his postures can give you a pretty good insight as to how he felt about what he's talking about. "The Deal" is a great example that shows not only verbally but through his expressive face and body language, how he felt about Zuko and about his childhood friend, Marco.

I think Ray needs that impetus to get going, such as a case, to which he can compare his life experiences. When he finds that similarity, he'll definitely share an anecdote. But for him to sit down with Ben and say "hey, this is what happened to me", probably won't happen :)

Kowalski's skeletons are hanging around in the living room, getting some air and listening to music.

From what I remember about him, I would have to agree with that. He would talk about whatever, no matter the situation.
